What is D.O.G.S?

Dakota Outdoor Gundog Series (D.O.G.S.) is a hunting competition for upland hunting dogs.
In these events, birds are planted in a 10 to 15 acre field. The goal is for the dog to hunt, point, or flush, then retrieve to hand.

The competition is split into Pointer and Flusher Classes.
These 2 Classes are then broken down into Divisions:

Big Dog Singles and Amateur Divisions ~ 1 player and 1 dog ~ 4 bird set with a 12 minute maximum time limit.

Doubles Division ~ 2 players and 1 dog ~ 5 bird set with a 15 minute maximum time limit.

Masters, Puppy, Lady and Youth Divisions ~ 1 player and 1 dog ~ 3 bird set with a 10 minute time limit.

General Rules of Competition
  • Handler leaves the gate at a brisk but safe walking pace. A walk is defined as one foot on the ground at all times. Absolutely no running is allowed.
  • Dogs must find birds inside of the competition field boundaries.
  • Flushing breeds must flush the birds without assistance from the handler.
  • Pointing breeds must establish a 3 second point before the handler is allowed to flush the bird.
  • The handler is allowed 2 shells per bird in a set and is awarded points for unused shells at the end of a run.
  • After the shot is taken dogs must retrieve birds back to where the shot was taken to be awarded full credit for the retrieve. If the handler has to move from the place of the shot taken to assist a dog on a retrieve only partial points are awarded for the retrieve.
  • Time stops when the final bird is in hand and the dog is in control. Points are awarded for each minute remaining of the allotted time at the end of the run.
  • Handlers must immediately leash their dogs after time has stopped and exit the competition field in the least intrusive route.
Birds that are hunted are usually chukars, others are quail and pheasants.
Trophies and payback will be awarded to the top 3 in classes specified per tournament. So come and join us for this great event!
